"LAS VOCES DE LAS PAREDES"
El centro histórico de la ciudad de Oaxaca, es decir, el zócalo y todas las calles que le rodean fue el principal lugar de concentración de los maestros durante el movimiento estallado en el 2006. Es también donde vivo y camino, hago mis compras, me encuentro con mis amigos y tomo fotos de todo cuanto veo.
Fue también aquí donde aprendí de esta lucha. Sobretodo a través de las pintas. Las paredes estaban llenas con leyendas y frases poderosas pintadas sobre el movimiento y especialmente llenas de la creatividad de gente muy talentosa, artistas anónimos. Si los pusiéramos en marcos, mucho podrían estar en galerías de arte y museos.
Quisiera que mi ensayo fotográfico sea un conducto del mensaje que escuché de las Voces de las Paredes.

"THE VOICES OF THE WALLS"
The Center of Oaxaca, that is the Zócolo and all the surrounding streets, was the main location for the teachers’ uprising of 2006. It is also where I live and walk and shop and meet friends and take pictures of everything I see.
It was there I learned what the rebellion was all about. More than anything else it was the graffiti, the walls filled with painted words or movement phrases and, especially, the creative depictions by unknown but very talented people. Had they been framed many could have been museum quality. In fact, the graphic museum, IAGO, mounted an exhibit called "Graffiteros al Paredón" (Graffiti Artists to the Big Wall).
I hope that my photo essay might serve as a conduit for the message I hear from "the Voices of the Walls."

Foto 1 - Este muchacho tiene algo que decir y lo está manifestando con todo el poder de su mano. Su mensaje es claro. This young man has something to say and he is saying it with the full power of his hands. His message is clear. September 2, 2006
Foto 2 - "Fuera Ulises Ruiz" fue una de las pintas mas comunes y una de las consignas mas fuertes durante ese año en Oaxaca. "Ulises Ruiz Out" was one of the strongest messages and the most common chant heard all year long in Oaxaca. August 20, 2006
Foto 3 - En la ciudad todos participaban en la lucha hasta los "chapulines" hacían pública su transparencia en el manejo de recursos. ¡Viva la fuerza chapulinera! Everyone in the city took a part in this good fight, even the "grasshoppers" made transparent to the public the use of their funds. Long live Grasshopper Power! "Report to the Public: Grasshoppers Working 1. 192 hours of work 2. 20 participating artists 3. 4 kilos of recycled garbage 4. 100s of negative criticisms 5. 5,000 pesos lost to robbery 6. 3 works disappeared 7. Foto 4 - "Ulises Asesino de Maestros" Mensajes fuertes fueron pintados en todas partes, mensajes claros y directos en los pilares del palacio de gobierno hacían notar la represión gubernamental. "Ulises, Assassin of Teachers" Strong messages were painted all over the city, clear and direct, on the pillars of the Government Palace which took note of the repression. July 20, 2006
Foto 5 - Hasta por correo los activistas mandaron un fuerte mensaje al mundo pidiendo la salida de la policía asesina y de un gobierno represor. The activists even used the post office to send their message to the world, Out Assassin Police, Out Evil Government. October 24, 2006

Foto 7 - "Ladrón que roba a ladrón..." URO recoge las sobras de "otro" para su Guelaguetza oficial donde pagaba 200 pesos para asistir. "The theif who steels from a theif..." (URO and Fox stealing money from the Guelaguetza) where they paid 200 pesos to those who would attend. Summer, 2006
Foto 8 - "Todos a la Mega-Marcha" Las barricadas durante este movimiento fueron, además de un símbolo de contención y protección, una importantísima fuente de noticias, avisos e inconformidades de la población. "Everyone to the Mega-March" During this movement, the barracades were more than a symbol of contention and protection, they were an important source of news, announcements and complaints by the public. Foto 9 - Después de la novena Mega-Marcha la calle que lleva el nombre del ilustre héroe de la independencia mexicana José María Morelos, grita al mundo la fuerte situación de represión y la fuerza del movimiento. After the ninth Mega-March, the street which bears the name of our hero of independence, José María Morelos, cried to the world about the repression and the force of the movement. Foto 10 - Las mujeres fueron un factor primordial en esta lucha. A través de la historia las oaxaqueñas, como las que aparecen en la imagen, mantienen esa actitud fuerte y determinada que sostuvieron al movimiento en todo momento. The women of Oaxaca were an important factor in this fight. Throughout its history, those Oaxaqueñas, like these who appear in this image, maintained a strong attitude and determination which sustained us in all its days. "OUT URO. Represser OUT. OUT Donkey." Foto 11 - Invitación directa... no puede ser mas claro, la ciudad lo proclama. A direct invitation... couldn't be clearer, the city proclaims: "ULISES RUIZ ORTIZ, the People of Oaxaca Do Not Want You, GET OUT." June 26, 2006
Foto 12 - Obituario con cruz incluida, han tratado de callar a las paredes. An obituary, with cross included, is calling from the walls: "Die URO, Military Police, the Same Stupidity Death to the Evil Government" November 20, 2006
Foto 13 - Los portales del zócalo gritan a los turistas sobre el peligro del gobierno local. La consigna no da lugar a dudas. The walls of the zócalo cry a warning to the tourists about this dangerous government. The call could not be clearer. "ULISES ASSASSIN - APPO LIVES!" July 14, 2007
Foto 14 - Las barricadas se convirtieron en trincheras y todos apoyábamos con nuestras mejores armas, una cámara que dispara y atrapa las voces de Oaxaca. The barracades were converted into trenches and all of us helped with our best weapons, a camera which shoots and captures the voices of Oaxaca. October 18, 2006

Foto 17 - "Yankee go home" es curioso pero esta frase es muy común en todos los pueblos del mundo. Estoy consciente de que las políticas de los Estados Unidos "blindan" el crecimiento de muchos países evitando su desarrollo en beneficio de gobiernos corruptos y represores. "Yankee go home" is curious but this phrase is common in all the world. I am very conscious that the policies of the United States have hindered the development of many countries for the benefit of corrupt and repressive governments. November 1, 2006
Foto 18 - Es irónico que los artistas del movimiento deban explicar al turismo que las "molestias" son producto de una lucha por los derechos del pueblo. It's ironic that these artists of the movement feel they must explain to the tourists that this "bother" is the result of the people fighting for their rights. "Dear Tourist, Sorry for this inconvenience But Oaxaca is fighting for its rights." November 30, 2006
Foto 19 - La lucha es popular, democrática e incluyente jóvenes y adultos, mujeres y campesinos alzan su vos en la paredes de la ciudad. The fight is popular, democratic and inclusive, with young people, adults, woman and campesinos who raise their voices on the walls of the city. Foto 20 - "Viva la Lucha Popular". Este muchacho y todos los jóvenes sostienen sobres sus cabezas este mensaje que nunca será olvidado mientras existan paredes que hablen. "Long Live the Popular Fight!" This young man and all these youth hold this message high over their heads and won't forget it as long as there are walls that speak. February 6, 2007

Tengo un enorme respeto por el movimiento magisterial y las propuestas de la APPO. Entiendo de la opresión y de las condiciones sociales que vive el pueblo oaxaqueño. Durante muchos años viví y trabajé en California apoyando a personas de bajos recursos para adquirir viviendas. Fui parte de muchas protestas y manifestaciones para defender los Derechos Humanos, el medio ambiente y contra la guerra en Viet Nam. También fui a Nicaragua para apoyar a los Sandinistas en su lucha contra los Contras, donde recolecté algodón con una brigada. Yo sentí que debía participar haciendo lo que estuviera a mi alcance para conseguir cambios en este mundo injusto. Yo respeto mucho el movimiento llevado a cabo en Oaxaca por lo que he vivido.
Los movimientos y protestas que se llevan a cabo en Estados Unidos y en todo el mundo pueden aprender mucho de lo que pasó en Oaxaca.
"El pueblo unido jamás será vencido".

I have an enormous respect for the teachers' movement and the message of APPO. I understand the oppression and the social conditions under which the people suffer. For many years I lived and worked in California helping the poor acquire decent housing. I took part in many protests fighting for Human Rights, the environment and an end to the war in Vietnam. I also went to Nicaragua where I worked with the Sandinistas in their fight against the contras and picked cotton with a US brigade organized to help the Sandinista cause. I feel I must do whatever I can to help bring change to this unjust world. I respect the rising up of this movement in Oaxaca where I live.
Protest movements in the United States could learn a lot from what occurred in Oaxaca this year.
